Pressure Cube is a new interface for musical expression that tracks the movement of an object suspended by elastic. Using pressure sensors in the corners of the cube shaped frame, control signals are generated by changes in tension of the elastic. An infrared sensor is used for calibration purposes.
Motivation
Pressure cube was initially intended to be an augmentation of the Leap Motion - a computer vision based hands free controller. The Leap provides very accurate finger tracking, however, without a tangible reference point it is near impossible to use it for any gestures that rely on absolute positioning (as opposed to relative motions). Integrating it with a physical interactive object would allow for both absolute hand positioning, along with a passive haptic response provided by the elastic. Due to the occlusion of the elastic, and the processing power required by the Leap made it an impractical endeavor with the available resources. In its place, an infrared sensor was used for re-calibration purposes, and Pressure Cube was developed into an interface of its own.
